4 Ways To Get Fit & Fabulous at Fifty

Do you feel fit and Fabulous at fifty?

Hey Golden Divas,

I need for you to talk to me regarding this topic today.

Last year was a big year for me and many of my friends. Social media was blowing up all across the globe as we shared birthday wishes of joy to one another regarding this milestone in our lives. After all, we just celebrated the fabulous big 5-0 but I’m not so sure if all of us can say YES to this week leading question.

If the answer isn’t yes now hopefully it will be in the near future.  The truth of the matter as women we have a sufficient amount of things in our lives that may demand our attention. Things we prioritize as we see that are urgent in nature, such as our relationship with our spouse, children, work, and friends. But what is our relationship like when it comes to us?

Particularly when it comes to our wellness and fitness routines?

I have never been considered a “gym bunny” or a workout queen, I did the basics, sit-ups, crunches, and walked the treadmill and it served me well (before I turned 50) now I have to step up my game before some major issues start to affect my health.

I must admit I can to do better with my workout routine and there’s no time like the present to create or refine an exercise routine that best suits my needs.

As you get older you start to pay close attention to your family medical history and I don’t mean just the immediate family, father, mother, and siblings. I mean the extended family, grandparents, cousins and aunts and uncles.

Here are a few things that are prevalent within my family, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attack, hearing loss and cancer are a few things that may be hereditary but with proper diet and exercise I can combat with the exception of the hearing loss.

So you see there are plenty of reasons why I should cultivate a relationship with fitness in my fifties, and there are plenty of reasons and ways you may want to as well.

One thing I know for sure it’s never too late to be fit and fabulous. You can achieve this at any age, even after 50. In fact, I truly believe this may be the best time to incorporate a new fitness routine.

Did you know after the age of 50 the rate of your muscle mass loss accelerates to about 1 pound of muscle each year?

Yes…this is true check it out at the American Council on Exercise.

So you know what that means we have to take charge of our health and get fit so that we can counteract this muscle loss. You know by doing this we can reap some benefits as well, such as lowering our blood pressure. Who wants to stay on blood pressure pills forever? I sure don’t.  We can also improve our cholesterol levels and body weight maintenance.

Did you know “the more active a woman is, the better her odds of avoiding breast cancer?”

So how do we get started? I’m glad you asked. Let’s talk about some win, win exercises and fitness routines that you and I may benefit from in our fifties (some of these may surprise you).

Here are 4 ways that will get you motivated.

  1. Walking
  2. Yoga
  3. Swimming
  4. Lifting weights

I know you were probably thinking about getting a personal trainer (that is your choice), but these 4 exercises have so many positive benefits that don’t even need to step in a gym. Okay let’s look at the following:

Okay let’s look at the following:

Exercise #1 Walking: Brisk walking is a great way to ease into an exercise routine. Golden Divas did you know “brisk walking” for 45 minutes three times a week offers tremendous brain-boosting benefits and prevents mental deterioration and the big bonus is you can actually lose some weight?

Exercise #2 Yoga: This is another form of exercise that benefits the fifty-plus woman greatly. It helps to deal with the symptoms of menopause which may include physical pain, like aching joints (Lord knows my knees have been killing me lately), yoga can also help make your bones stronger and ladies we can lose weight (or maintain a healthy weight).

A fitness routine that includes yoga can help with the moodiness and depression that often accompanies menopause because physical activity can improve your psychological health at any stage of life, reports the Mayo Clinic and the big bonus with yoga it can help with sexual function.

Exercise #3 Swimming: Now if you are looking for a good cardio exercise to do in your fifties (because we know this is essential for us) and to get your heart pumping with no impact shock to your sensitive joints and muscles, according to Livestrong.com you don’t have to look any further. Swimming reduces weight gain and strengthens your bones and it’s a preventative measure for one of the scarier risk factors we as older women may be facing such as cancer.

Exercise #4 Lifting Weights: This form of exercise can actually slow down the loss of bone density, and you will look and feel great while you’re doing it. If you don’t want to go to the gym you can purchase inexpensive dumbbells, exercise bands, medicine balls and an inflatable fitness ball, and set up a simple home gym. Using weights is a great way to stay fit ladies!

Skin care…..WOW!!!!!! Trying to find the best skin care can be expensive. Someone told me to use toner to prevent bad pores in the face. I don’t think I should use a toner because it will try out my skin. Oh well…..but what I want know is how to remove skin tags thst are now popping up every where. Any home remedies? I don’t want to have them with hairs hanging out of them.

      My Dear Kim!

Menopause is the new PUBERTY with it comes all kinds of skin changes. I always had oily skin with minimal breakouts on my face. NOW my skin stays super oily when most people going through this stage skin is getting drier and let’s not talk about the breakouts. It seems like I’m allergic to the makeup that I was accustomed to wearing now I’m reading the ingredients in every makeup product that I buy.

The last year has been touch and go for me with makeup. I really had to go back to the basics of the basics with Clinique because it is gentle on my skin.

As far as your skin tags go I had the skin tags on my neck lasered off at Calumet Dermatology near River Oaks. There are some over the counter products to help with the removal of skin tags. I don’t know of any home remedies yet!

Thanks for chiming in on the skin care wars!

      Kim,

My motto is to fake it until we make it! Mind over the matter again. I know most women including myself cannot feel sexy when we don’t think we look sexy…but I’m here to tell you. If you want to bring sexy back even though when you look in the mirror you don’t think you see it, start thinking you’re sexy until the weight comes off, cause baby you have to reverse the game. Whatever your fashion choice is you have to believe when you put on those clothes you’re the one wearing them and the clothes are not wearing you! My point is one of my favorite Fall/Winter ensemble is jeans and a turtle neck, nothing sexy about it but it’s the way it makes me feel!Empowered and Sexified!
