MEET ELYSE KENNARD
Elyse J. Kennard is the owner of Elyse Kennard and Associates, a graphic design firm located in Glen Ellyn, IL. I have had my firm for many years. I attended Bradley University in Peoria, IL. Later I attended The American Academy of Art, Illinois Institute of Technology, Northwestern University, and the College of DuPage. Some of my clients have included Nielsen, National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the City of Aurora, Glen Ellyn Chamber of Commerce, Service Club of Chicago, and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in American (ELCA).
I have worked mainly in design while illustrating for some of my clients. I took an illustration class at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn a few years ago. One of my assignments was to create a designer T-shirt. I chose to use the theme “Today Is A Good Hair Day.” I decided that the best way to illustrate that is to create four different women’s images with great hairdos. I wanted to have multicultural images. I got an A on that assignment. Fast forward to March 2020, Coronavirus Pandemic, and TOO MUCH TIME ON MY HANDS, I started to look back on my body of work from over the years. I wanted to post my art on Facebook; I had the time. Also, I wanted to give a smile to my Facebook friends and family’s faces when they viewed my work. It worked! Every couple of days, I have been posting a different illustration that I have created. And it just so happened that when I featured my four different designer T-Shirt designs, I got requests from some of my viewers to buy my T-shirts.
I was amazed! I only had photos of my T-shirt designs on model images that I could get from the Internet. I didn’t really have any T-shirts printed up at all. Next, I contacted a woman who could print my T-shirts. I met her about five months earlier when my cousin, Illinois Supreme Court Justice P. Scott Neville, Jr., was running for office. I was the creative director for his campaign. I did all of his graphics, including a T-shirt design. As a result, I had to work with Yorli Huff (Engendering Strength LLC), who has her own T-shirt company. The process that she uses is sublimation, not silk-screening, to print the images on the T-shirts. I am so glad that I had a familiar contact. You’re only as good as your contacts in this business.
Once I established that contact, I then had to come up with a logo. I also needed to copyright my designs. After that, I had to get boxes and bags to package my product. I also needed to come up with more designs, which I am currently doing. It was-and-is so exciting. I am doing what I love to do and what I have been trained to do! I’m in heaven!
