TOP 11 BEAUTY TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON

Hello, Golden Divas!

The holidays are right around the corner, and you’re already going 100mph with endless shopping, planning, and cooking ideas for a spread on

Christmas Day, and let’s not forget the ball dropping on New Year’s Eve. In between time, you have lots of festivities planned and not enough time to make sure you will be looking your best for the occasions. Parties, late nights, sumptuous food, and drinking all combined in a month is a lot.

‘Tis the season to be jolly, fa-la-la-la-la, la, la, la, can wear a diva out. Ladies, we all know the holiday season can take a toll on our face and our bodies, so trying to keep that Christmas sparkle and glow can become quite cumbersome. Although all of the gaiety will come with some great fun, it is a formula for dull or red skin, dry skin patches, under-eye circles, lackluster eyes, premature aging caused by too much sun, and weight gain.

Golden Divas don’t worry because C50 have you covered with some reminder beauty tips that will have you glowing through the holiday season into the new decade of 20/20.

So, let’s get ready to P.A.R.T.Y. with these festive beauty tips so we can step into the holidays looking and feeling our radiant best.

TOP 11 BEAUTY TIPS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON

1. NEVER EVER SLEEP IN YOUR MAKEUP

No matter how late it is or how tired you are, always remove your makeup. Keep a packet of moisturizing makeup remover wipes in your bedside table (along with the Panadol), so, at a pinch, you can remove the worst of it as you lie in bed.

Make sure you keep your skin moisturized. Keep a small bottle of rosehip oil by your bedside. If you are exhausted, use the wipes and apply some nourishing rosehip oil to your face. At least you won’t wake up with an eyelash stuck to your cheek, and your skin moisture levels depleted due to your horrendous hangover.

2. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER

I know that you’ve heard it a million times, but the best liver tonic and skin purifier is H2O. Alcohol takes a lot of water to flush out the kidneys and liver after the fact, but it also helps you not to get as drunk if you drink a lot of water when you are drinking.

3. TRY BLACK-OWNED BEAUTY BRANDS

There are many new beauty brands designed by and for African American women. These makeup companies offer a wide range of products that are designed to fit all skin tones, from the lightest to the deepest. Some of the best and most famous makeup companies for African American women include Black Opal, M.A.C., Mented, A.J. Crimson Beauty, Pat McGrath, Buttah, and IMAN Cosmetics.

4. USE A LIGHT REFLECTIVE PRIMER UNDER FOUNDATION
Not only does a radiance-boosting primer help with the longevity of your foundation, but the light reflective particles add luminosity and give you a “glow from within.”

5. USE YELLOW-BASED FOUNDATION AND CONCEALER

It is easy for a foundation to look chalky and cakey on extremely dark skin. To prevent inadvertently using a shade of foundation that is too light for you and looks unnatural against your skin, make sure that you buy a yellow-based foundation with warm undertones that won’t clash with your deep skin tone.

Your eye makeup might still be on, but your foundation is patchy at best by 5 pm, and you are due at the party at 5.30 pm. A pressed powder foundation offers coverage to even out your skin tone, and give you a fresh looking base. Yes, you will still need a bit of blush and highlighter, but no one will bet you haven’t been home and re-applied your perfect face.

Combat late nights and party lights; if you aren’t getting enough sleep, you can get bad under eye shadows, so it is handy to have an under-eye dark shadow secret weapon on hand. A yellow-based concealer under the eyes, slightly lighter than your skin tone, will neutralize the underlying mauve/purple based shadows.

6. EMBRACE METALLIC EYESHADOW

Due to the deep tone of your skin, some shades of eyeshadow don’t show up nearly as vividly as you hope. This can be a frustrating problem that might dissuade you from applying sophisticated or dramatic eye makeup looks.

Try using eyeshadow products with a shimmery or metallic finish. Stay away from those that are matte. These eyeshadows generally show up more easily against darker skin and appear more vivid.

7. USE EARTH TONES

Earth tones are far from the muted, “boring” colors that many people make them out to be. Instead, earth tones encompass a wide range of natural-looking colors. These colors include shades of dark green, warm gray, and a wide variety of brown and golden hues. These colors look amazing against African American skin because they help complement and enhance the deep undertones in your skin. Earth tones are my favorite!

8. MIX FOUNDATIONS

It’s a sad truth that many foundation lines from popular makeup brands are simply not designed for African American women. If you like the formula of a foundation but are having a difficult time finding a shade that works for your unique skin tone, try blending two foundation shades.

Choose a shade of foundation that is one to two shades lighter than your natural skin tone. Choose another darker one. Mix the shades until you create a hue that matches your skin tone as it should. I have to do this and it’s a game-changer when it comes to finding the right shade.

9. USE A GOLD SHIMMER

African American women are some of the only women who are lucky enough to be able to pull off gold highlighter successfully. Gold tones look beautiful against deep, African American skin. Grab that golden highlighter and shimmer like the precious gem you are. I love some gold shimmer on my face!

10. WEAR DARK LIPSTICK

Dark shades of lipstick look great on African American women, even mature women such as ourselves. Unfortunately, they can appear gothic and overdone on women with lighter skin. However, they pair nicely against the deep skin tone of African Americans.

Take advantage of your ability to pull off darker shades of lipstick. You can do this by wearing colors like dark red, deep plum, and even shades of navy and black.

11. STEER CLEAR OF THE CHEESE PLATTER AND TRY NOT TO EAT YOUR BODY WEIGHT IN HAM THIS HOLIDAY SEASON

It’s easy to lose sight of your long term goals on Christmas Day, but it is only one day. Don’t let that one day ruin your hard work. Yes, enjoy your food, but you don’t need to go crazy and throw your new year’s resolution to lose weight out the window before you even start.

Chew with purpose and eat mindfully. Don’t eat to the point of discomfort. Not only will you regret it tomorrow, but you will throw your metabolism out of whack, and your weight loss efforts thwarted.

Make sure you eat plenty of salad. Fill up on the stuff (only if it isn’t a richly dressed salad). Green salad with balsamic is the best for lower calories.

Switch the cocktail for a mocktail (a nonalcoholic drink consisting of a mixture of fruit juices or other soft drinks) or if you must drink have less and higher quality pink champagne and enjoy every sip. If you do drink, have something you enjoy but less of it.

Get moving and stay busy. Get in a quick workout, help in the kitchen, keep yourself busy. Not only will you eat less because you are working, but you’ll also be burning more calories than just sitting around like a lump on a Christmas Yuletide log (ladies, I think we have this covered, we’re the ones in the kitchen).

It’s OK to loosen up a little without losing the big picture. A week with a weight stable is not a serious gain, so let yourself have a few treats, but make them count. Make sure you want it, and it is the best quality.

Enjoy the time with your family. Try to focus on the company, not just-food. If you are struggling with stress (families can do this to you), don’t overeat to compensate or, worse, drink to excess because you aren’t comfortable (you may say something you’ll regret). Maybe a time out in another room or the kitchen, get a glass of water and take a few breaths if they are upsetting you, can help you get through the day without ruining your resolve.

So there you have it — eleven party time strategies to help you stay beautiful throughout the season and the best thing about all of these tips are they are ageless. No matter if your 25 or 52 or beyond it will work for you ladies.
