The Good, The Bad ad The-Oh-No!
You have entered into “Destination of Skin-Nation” where we can explore the 7 signs of aging, such as sunspots, teeny tiny fine lines, crow’s feet, dullness, dryness, puffy eyes and drooping.
When I hit the big 5 – 0 it was a life-altering moment for me, especially when I looked into the mirror and noticed that suddenly my face didn’t have that “glow” it had in my earlier years.
This golden stage of my life opened my eyes to subtle changes that were appearing on my face. Changes like puffiness, fine lines and wrinkles, and dullness.
I couldn’t help but think is my face giving away my age? Are other people seeing what I’m starting to see on a daily basis and how can I fight these dreadful signs of aging?
Age-Defying Skin. Maybe She Was Born With It!
As women we all want our skin to be beautiful and age-defying. Some of us are born with this type of skin and some of us have to work darn hard to get it.
Despite your skin type whether it’s normal, dry, oily, a combination, sensitive, or acne-prone your new skin is emerging packed with dullness, rough texture, fine lines, and sagging.
Now if this isn’t a wake-up call I don’t know what is… that is why this was at the forefront of my beauty concerns. It is imperative that you learn how to take care of your skin, no matter the type of skin you have been blessed with because your skin can be your best or worst advocate when it comes to aging.
A little line here, a sag or bag there—your skin may be giving away your age, it can make YOU look older than you really are and no woman wants to look like they have premature skin beyond their age.
Did you know fifty-one percent of Americans think they actually look younger than their age? I bet they have a great skincare routine that they 51 % are implementing daily because believe me, it takes a lot of work to have beautiful supple hydrated skin in your golden years.
Let me ask you a question. Are you one of that of Americans that love the skin you’re in? If not keep on reading because one of the things we will be expected to do in our fifties is to try and save our skin so that we can learn to love it again.
Ladies, the reality is we really need to get serious about taking good care of our skin; especially our face. Whether you were the few lucky ones who never had to worry about a skin regime and inherited flawless skin from your parents you still need to read this post because Mother Nature isn’t playing.
We all know everyone ages differently and our genes and lifestyle play a very important role in how we age. That is why staying mentally and physically active can help women in their 50’s look and feel younger; especially your skin.
The Truth of The Matter!!
When you look in the mirror at your face do you ever wonder why your skin looks so dull and tired? I know I do.
If you ever asked yourself that question let me break down the good, the bad, and the-oh-no truth about the signs of aging when it comes to your face in your fifties!
The Good: The chance of you getting acne in your fifties is greatly reduced because your skin is getting drier making blemishes less common.
The Bad: Getting to the wrinkles and crinkles of the matter. You start losing muscle, bone, and fat under your skin along with collagen and elastin; unfortunately, when you start losing the MBF fine lines and wrinkles start to appear.
Some of the culprits that may cause these lifelines to appear prematurely are the following: poor health, bad eating habits, stress, drugs, alcohol, pollution, and tanning significantly.
Unfortunately, there are more causes for wrinkles to appear, repeated muscle motions—laughing, squinting at the computer screen, sipping lattes through a straw—can etch crow’s-feet around the eyes and marionette lines near the mouth. I know what you’re probably thinking, but luckily there’s some help out there.
Golden Diva’s as you can see at this stage in our lives we’re fighting a lot of stuff to prevent aging. So the traditional three-step regimen of cleanse, tone, and moisturize may not be the best choice for your fifty-something skin.
Instead, we need to focus on cleanser, treatment, and moisturizer targeted for mature skin. With advances in skincare, radiant supple skin can be regained by using the right skin-care products.
Suggested remedy: try prescription products such as retinol products like Retin A or – Renova says Helen M. Torok, M.D., medical director for the Dermatology & Surgery Center at Trillium Creek in Medina, Ohio.
Tina B. West, MD, a cosmetic dermatologist in Atlanta suggests adding these basics to your skin-care routine: antioxidants (which help fight free radicals), sunscreen (look for an SPF of at least 30), and retinoids.
These creams and serums can repair damaged skin by speeding up cell turnover. You should pick skin products with antioxidants and glycolic acid. These products promote skin thickening and increase collagen production.
The- Oh-No: Most likely in your 50s you’re going to start noticing age spots and skin tags. This is one of the things I remember saying I didn’t want on my face or neck when I got older. So much for wishful thinking as an African American, our skin is prone to getting skin tags.
Suggested remedy considers trying a dermatologist-prescribed hydroquinone product — “this is the gold standard for reducing age spots,” Torok says.
For those pesky skin tags, the good thing is they are usually benign and a dermatologist can remove them through freezing, snipping or cauterizing. My skin tags on my neck were removed by cauterization with minimal pain and scarring.
Remember aging is a beautiful process that is inevitable whether you’re fighting it every step of the way to age gracefully and peacefully there’s help out there to assist you with achieving your beauty goals.
Starting with prevention it is the best treatment to fight the 7 signs of aging and there is a gold mine of products out there for us “Golden Diva’s” ranging from the low end to the high end that can help us maintain our skin to perfection. BUT…you must do your research to see what is best for your skin type.
